This region occupies the shoreline from the Uvarov basilica to the gently sloping hill in the western area of the city. The earliest necropolis of the city, churches, manufacturing complexes, and ancient and medieval homes have all been excavated here. Systematic investigations began in 1931. Continuous stone fences and windowless facades of houses built right next to each other formed long, narrow streets.
